Removing moisture damage flooring

To remove moisture-damaged flooring, first remove excess water and dry the area with fans and dehumidifiers to prevent mold. Then, carefully remove the affected floorboards using a pry bar or appropriate tool for the flooring type. After removing the planks, inspect the subfloor for damage or remaining moisture. If the subfloor is wet or moldy, dry and clean it thoroughly; if it’s significantly damaged, it will also need to be replaced.

1. Remove Excess Water
Use towels, a mop, or a wet-dry vacuum to soak up standing water from the surface.
If possible, turn off the source of the leak to prevent further water damage.

2. Dry the Area
Place fans and dehumidifiers in the affected area to remove moisture and dry out the floor and subfloor.
Allow adequate drying time; this can take several days. A moisture meter can be used to ensure the subfloor is completely dry.

3. Remove Damaged Flooring
Hardwood:
Carefully pry up and remove damaged boards with a pry bar.
Laminate:
Remove the planks by disengaging the click-lock system. You can start at the edge of the room or a doorway and work your way in. For the final board, you may need to cut off the locking system’s tongue to remove it.
Vinyl:
Use a screwdriver or pry bar to lift and cut out the damaged sections of vinyl flooring.

4. Inspect and Dry the Subfloor
Once the flooring is removed, inspect the subfloor for any signs of moisture, decay, or mold growth.
If the subfloor is wet, continue to use fans and dehumidifiers until it is completely dry.

5. Address Mold and Further Damage
Clean any mold or mildew with a phosphate cleaning solution or other appropriate agent.
If the subfloor is rotten, decaying, or significantly damaged, it needs to be replaced.

If you see extensive mold, or if the damage is severe, it is best to hire a professional restoration company.
For significant water damage, especially with black water, professional remediation is recommended to prevent further issues.
